American Mensa announces Groups of the Year

The winners of the third annual Group of the Year Awards (GOTYA) program were announced at the Annual Gathering in Dallas, Texas, in early July. They are:

Class V:Borderline (Ariz.) Mensa
Class IV:Northwest Florida Mensa
Class III:Columbus Mensa
Class II:San Diego Mensa
Class I:Southeast Michigan Mensa

Four of these winners - Southeast Michigan, San Diego, Northwest Florida, and Borderline - have been in the winner’s circle before. They are becoming proficient at amassing points throughout the year so their local group continues to top other entries.

We have a brand new winner this year in the Class III entries, where Columbus Mensa was just 24 points ahead of its closest competitor. Those extra points were in the testing and Publications Recognition Program categories. Having frequent testing sessions and a newsletter nominated for several awards helped Columbus Mensa collect the GOTYA honor. Class III is an intermediate category for groups with 200 to 399 members.

In the other four classes, frequent testing, Leadership Development Workshop representation, and early and/or prompt renewals pushed the winners ahead of other groups. That is, if there were other groups. Two classes, V (less than 99 members) and II (400 to 900 members), were represented by only one entry - the winner from last year. Nonetheless, Borderline and San Diego both take home prizes for continuing to encourage early and prompt renewals and for scheduling regular testing sessions in their areas.

Northwest Florida Mensa returns for another GOTYA commendation this year. Their early and/or prompt renewals boosted them ahead of their competitor in the Class IV medium-group category of 100 to 199 members. The other returnee, Southeast Michigan Mensa, from the jumbo Class I category (more than 900 members) amassed just 19 points more than their closest competitor; 31 testing sessions helped SEMM climb to the top of their class.

The intention of the GOTYA program is to help local groups become healthier by encouraging greater participation in American Mensa’s programs. The winners each received a check for $250 and a tabletop sign to display at their local events. Each winning group’s name is also engraved on the permanent GOTYA plaque in the National Office, along with past winners. Congratulations to the winners and thanks to all 15 groups that participated!
