| Comments: The first Mensa meetings in Florida's Manatee and Sarasota counties were held in 1976. As interest and the number of members grew, this area became a functioning subgroup of its parent, Tampa Bay Mensa. By November 1989, with 120 members, the group was confident and cohesive enough to gain its own charter and amicably separate from Tampa Bay Mensa. With the subsequent merger with Peace River Mensa in Charlotte County in February 2000, membership now exceeds 190. |
