Arlington, Texas (April 1, 2004) — On April 16-18, more than 175 members of Mensa, the high IQ society, will travel through space, build an empire for penguins, and go on a ghost hunt*.
Have they lost their minds?
No…they’ll be attending Mind Games®, a three-day game playing marathon at which members of Mensa play and rate the year’s newest board and card games.
Mind Games is an annual competition at which members of Mensa judge new board games on their playability, aesthetics, value, and appeal. The five board games that score the highest receive Mensa Select® distinction, an award that is coveted among game manufacturers.
The competition is held each spring in a different location. This year, it will be held in Chicago. Mensans from around the world will gather to judge the 50+ games.
“Board game manufacturers are always coming up with great new games,” said Jack Woodhead, chief judge of the competition. “Our judges are each required to play at least 30 games from start to finish, so they’ll be very busy this year rating some really exciting games.
“One of the misconceptions of the Mensa Select seal is that a game has to be “brainy” to earn the seal. When we judge these games, we’re looking for games that are original, interesting and fun. You don’t have to be a genius to play and enjoy them.”
The 2004 competition marks the 15th Mensa Mind Games competition. Past winners include such popular games as Scattergories, Tri-Bond, Taboo, Apples to Apples, and Blokus.
Based in Arlington, Texas, American Mensa is an organization for anyone who scores in the top two percent on an accepted, standardized intelligence test. Those interested in the organization may obtain more information by calling 1-800-66-MENSA or visiting us.mensa.org.
