"The Mensa Mind Games winners are challenging games that we feel are quality products to offer our customers," said Ellen Heaney, buyer and gift director of Barnes & Noble.
The games - selected from those entered by manufacturers ranging from mom-and-pops to national companies - were judged on originality, game play, play value, aesthetics and clarity of instructions.
The annual event divides more than 80 Mensans into playing groups that make their way through the games, filling out score sheets, and ranking each of the games.
In previous years, American Mensans have selected games that have gone on to become top-sellers and award-winners such as Scattergories, Trivial Pursuit and Terrace. One of the 1997 Mind Games winners, Quoridor, was chosen by Games Magazine as its Game of the Year.
Based in Arlington, Texas, American Mensa is for anyone who scores in the top 2 percent of the general population on a standardized intelligence test. The organization has approximately 47,000 members. For more information about applying for membership, interested persons can call (800) 66-MENSA or visit www.previous.us.mensa.org.
