Arlington, Texas (June 14, 2004) – A quarter of a million IQ points will descend on Las Vegas this Fourth of July as members of Mensa assemble for their 42nd Annual Gathering. From June 30 until July 5, more than 2,000 members of the high IQ society will be learning to tango, touring nuclear test sites, eating hundreds of pounds of chocolate, and learning about Gregorian chant.
“Mensa conventions are not like any other conventions,” said Cookie Bakke, chair of the 2004 Annual Gathering. “It feels like a family reunion, only members of our Mensa family come from every corner of the world, every profession, every religion, and every background.
“Our programs are going to be as diverse as our membership,” said Bakke. “We have ‘brainy’ seminars such as Science in the Writing of Mark Twain, as well as zany activities like an 80’s costume dance. We also have some very special activities planned including a mass reaffirmation of wedding vows and a performance by Echoes of the Platters.”
The 2004 Annual Gathering will feature tracks of programming for those interested in gambling, science, rock & roll, and the city of Las Vegas. There will also be special tracks of programming just for children, tweens, and teens. Many of Mensa’s 150 special interest groups will meet during the Annual Gathering including the SCUBA, rock climbing, and quilting groups.
American Mensa will also be sponsoring an admission test for people curious to know if they qualify for membership. The test will be given on Saturday, July 3, at 9:30 a.m. Members of the public (14 years of age and older) may take the test for $30. Parental permission is required for anyone under the age of 18.
American Mensa is an organization for anyone who scores in the top two percent of the general population on an accepted, standardized intelligence test. For more information about the organization, visit www.previous.us.mensa.org or call (800) 66-MENSA.
